Research activities

Pompilio Piso is Professor of Surgery and Chairman of the Department of General- and Visceral Surgery at Hospital Barmherzige Brueder, Regensburg, Germany. He is one of the pioneers of the multimodality treatment of peritoneal surface malignancies (PSM) in Germany, which he is involved in since 1995. He was President of the World Congress on PSM held 2012 in Berlin, together with Paul Sugarbaker. Pompiliu Piso has conducted several trials (e.g. COMBATAC trial, German HIPEC registry) and published many original papers and reviews, mainly in the field of gastrointestinal oncology (167 PubMed listed July 2021). He is member of several national and international societies and actively involved in surgical training courses with live surgery and in multidisciplinary seminars performed with medical oncologists. At present he is principal investigator of the PREVENT (FLOT9) trial looking for the impact of HIPEC as a adjuvant treatment of gastric cancer after R0-resection. Professor Piso has a vast clinical activity. The Barmherzige Brueder hospital is the largest Catholic hospital in Germany. Our Department is performing about 3500 operations every year. A team of 30 doctors is providing high quality medical care for several benign and malignant conditions. We are training center for cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC and perform about 110-120 procedures every year. Main indications are pseudomyxoma peritonei, colorectal cancer, peritoneal mesothelioma, gastric cancer and ovarian cancer. Our department is documenting all cases in the German HIPEC registry and we encourage the treatment within studies. Our MDT is screening up to 1000 patients every year for the multimodality treatment strategy. We cooperate close with other members of the Peritoneal Surface Oncology Group International.

Biography

Professor Piso is currently Chairman of the Department for General and Visceral Surgery, Hospital Barmherzige Brueder Regensburg, the largest Catholic hospital in Germany. He is also chairman of the visceral oncologic center at the same institution, certified by the German Cancer Society for colorectal, gastric, esophageal, pancreatic and liver cancer.
Pompiliu Piso was trained as a surgeon at the Medical School of Hannover, Germany under the supervision of Rudolf Pichlmayr. He was certified as surgeon in 1999 and as visceral surgeon in 2002.
In 2004 Pompiliu Piso moved to Regensburg as Professor for Gastrointestinal Surgical Oncology, being at the same time deputy chairman of the Department for Surgery at the University Medical Center in Regensburg.
He received the title Doctor honoris causa from the University of Timisoara, Romania for intense support of medical training and research activities.
He is currently Chairman of the Association for Surgical Oncology in Germany and member of the Presidium of the German Society of General and Visceral Surgery, an ESSO affiliated society.
Pompiliu Piso joined the ESSO Board of Directors in October 2020.
He was awarded the honoray title of Fellow of the European Board of Surgery 2021.
